The Merchant Navy has been
forgotten when any history of the war is written yet without them the
major battles would not have been won. During the World War II the
British Merchant Navy lost over 2,400 ships due to war causes ranging
from submarine attacks to collisions and running ashore in blackout
conditions. Allied and Neutral vessels lost another 2,000 ships, the
Japanese Merchant Navy was decimated and the German and Italian fleets
were continually attacked in coastal waters or seized in foreign ports.
The Battle of the Atlantic commenced on 4th September 1939 with the
sinking of the ATHENIA and finished on 6th May 1945 with the sinking of
the AVONDALE PARK.
We have comprehensive information on all British Merchant ships
lost in WWII and are now working on Allied vessels and British ships
lost in WWI.
We have information on 12,000 ships lost in both wars.
We have full histories of an additional 10,000 ships both pre and
post war.
We have over 1,000 survivors reports from British vessels lost.
We have the names of over 31,000 Merchant Navy personnel who lost
their lives linked into full information of how the ship was lost.
We have the names of over 1,000 Maritime Royal Artillery Regiment
gunners who lost their lives at sea also linked into the ship they
were lost on.
