The Merchant Navy has been forgotten when any history of the war is written yet without them the major battles would not have been won. During the World War II the British Merchant Navy lost over 2,400 ships due to war causes ranging from submarine attacks to collisions and running ashore in blackout conditions. Allied and Neutral vessels lost another 2,000 ships, the Japanese Merchant Navy was decimated and the German and Italian fleets were continually attacked in coastal waters or seized in foreign ports.
The Battle of the Atlantic commenced on 4th September 1939 with the sinking of the ATHENIA and finished on 6th May 1945 with the sinking of the AVONDALE PARK.
